Back to band info Matthijs Barnhoorn Violin, Mandolin, Bass guitar, Djembe, vocals Matthijs Barnhoorn (12-11-1983) Matthijs has grown up with folk music. As a toddler he was already a great lover of violin music. As young child he scraped along with various bands on his practice violin. At the age of 8 he finally went to violin classes. His teacher, Jan Dam, learned the techniques of the classical violin. Back home he continued to play along with CD's Dave Swarbrick, Chris Leslie en Fairport Convention. At the age of 13 he made personal contact with Fairport Convention.

At the end of an interview he asked Ric Sanders whether he could play something on Matthijs. violin. After doing so, the violin was handed over the Chris Leslie and finally came in the hands of Matthijs. Apparently he made a great impression, because ever since that time Matthijs is regularly asked to play along with this legendary folkrock formation whenever he is at a concert. In the autumn of 2001, during a performance with Fairport Convention, Matthijs came in touch with another legendary band, Magna Carta. Chris and Linda Simpson were immediately impressed and a new musical co-operation was born. Since then Matthijs is playing with Magna Carta all over the globe. Matthijs doesn't only play the violin. In the course of the years his collection of instruments has extended. This can be seen during a performance of Tapsalteerie. Amongst others he plays mandolin, bass guitar, acoustic guitar and djembé
